Every season I like to do a deep clean in different areas of the house. The last few months I’ve had an itch to go through the shelves in our bedroom, there was some work that needed to be done but I kept putting it off. I finally bit the bullet this week and started making progress. Our bedroom is pretty small, so instead of a nightstand, I have a large shelving unit that holds my jeans, current go-to shoes and my loungewear. I knew things were starting to get out of hand once my denim shelf was overflowing - but I knew that meant I had to try everything on and to be honest, I just hadn’t been feeling it. So the first thing I did this week was clear off all my shelves. Yep, basically just pushed everything out to the floor so I could start rebuilding from scratch, that method always works best for me. I took my jeans and spread them out and started trying them on one by one. Yes, this is work, but trying everything on at once allows you really see what you have and compare things on the spot. I knew I had too many jeans, and I needed to get rid of a good chunk. So I tried them all on and ended up cutting down to almost half! The minimalistic me was very excited. Next was shoes.
I think my biggest issue with shoes is that they never seem to look tidy because there’s just too many. So the first thing I did was separate all the shoes on my shelves into two categories, what I currently wear (mostly sandals and slides), and ones that are out of season (mostly boots at the moment). This cleared up a lot of room for my shoes to be effortlessly displayed, and ready to reach for on a daily basis.
Every time I go through a closet cleanse I feel so much better. It’s like a weight is lifted off my shoulder. It makes early morning ‘what to wear’ decisions so much easier, downsizing the amount of choices, and makes pairing pieces so much simpler (I can actually see everything)! Sure, I might need to reach for my chest of out-of-season items every so often if there’s something specific I want to wear, but I love the idea of going up to my closet and not feeling overwhelmed with the amount of choices in front of me.
